Shropshire Farming Talk: Conversation can provide hope for the future
Talking to someone who understands the problems and worries in the rural community can give a person hope for the future.
The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and other supportive farming charities are receiving an increase in calls to the free 24/7 confidential helpline 0800 188 4444.
There are many families who are distressed and worried about the future but discussing their thoughts and options can alleviate some of the pressures.
RABI can offer practical support, such as one-to-one expert information and guidance to meet individual needs.
It can offer financial support, which can be helpful to those in a crisis, or grants to low-income people and emotional support with farming – focused mental health counselling, and self-help click and chat well-being support.
Farming can be a lonely occupation at times, with only a radio for company in the tractor cab, during the cultivation seasons and checking and feeding stock daily needs concentration.
If you have opportunity, message a friend or neighbour to ask 'How are you doing?' and listen to the answer.
Asking ''How are you really doing?' can give you both chance to talk, and then suggest another catch up soon.
Meanwhile, the Shropshire Committee has been grateful for the gift of use of beautiful wedding marquees for events.
We held a Prosecco and Puddings event in July followed by Pimms and Puddings in September and these wonderful events raised £2849.56 in total.
The Salopian Ploughing Society have donated £1,000, and RABI’s presence at local shows has continued to raise awareness of the farming charity.
We look forward to the Shropshire Quiz night on Friday, February 7, at Hadnall VH.
Also, next year, save the date of March 20 to enjoy Ludlow Charity Race Day.
If you would like to be involved in any way, sponsoring, advertising, or simply coming along, our rRegional manager Kate Jones will be delighted to give further information via kate.jones@rabi.org.uk or by calling 07876 492839.
The RABI and SFYFC Illuminated Christmas Tractor Run will be held on Sunday, December 15 at Shrewsbury Livestock Market, along with a craft fair starting at 4.30pm.
This will take the same route through Shrewsbury, leaving the market at 6pm, and with many twinkling lights adorning the highly polished work horses of the fields.
Many farming people give freely of their time and efforts to help charities and we are all grateful for their support.
