Flood alerts across Shropshire as residents hit by aftermath of Storm Darragh

A host of flood alerts are in place for Shropshire with scores of homes still affected by the aftermath of Storm Darragh.

Flood barriers are in place in Shrewsbury and Ironbridge due to the level of the River Severn.

It comes as flood warnings are in place across the county, including Pentre, Melverley, Maesbrook, Ironbridge, Jackfield, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Marton, Highley, and Quatford.

Flood alerts are also in place for the Tern and Perry catchments as well as the Upper Teme.

Updates on the state of the situation are expected to be delivered later this morning.

It comes as scores of homes have been left without power or water across the county.

In Telford St George's Primary School said it was closed as of 7.17am - with no water.

A post from the school on social media said: "School closed for now as no water. Severn Trent cannot give further info other than they are trying to fix it. We may be able to open later but it is out of our hands currently. We will be in touch. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

It comes after the county was battered by Storm Darragh throughout the weekend.

More than 101 reported power cuts are still listed on National Grid's updates - affecting 1,785 properties, with 428 listed as priorities, while Severn Trent say some homes are without water in Telford, Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Westbury, and the Cleobury areas.

In Powys around 1,500 homes are without power, with 330 described as priorities.

Telford & Wrekin Council said there had been damage to Abraham Darby Leisure Centre, with the site closed on Saturday as a result. A decision is expected today on when it will reopen.

An update on social media said: "Please note that Abraham Darby Leisure Centre will be closed over the weekend due to health & safety issues caused by high winds. A decision will be taken on Monday morning as to when the centre will be safe to reopen. This does not affect the school."

The council had also reported damage to the driving range at the Horsehay Village Golf & Fitness Centre, which was closed on Saturday, again to be reassessed this morning.

Over the weekend the council reported that around 90 trees had been felled in the borough.

Four people were taken to hospital – two with potentially serious injuries - following crashes in Shropshire during Storm Darragh, it has been confirmed.

A  man and a woman, were both treated for potentially serious injuries and taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment after a car collided with a tree on the A458 between Much Wenlock and Morville.

One of the people had been 'medically trapped' during the incident and was cut free by the fire service.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A458 at around 7.30pm on Saturday and sent two ambulances to the scene.

“On arrival, crews found one car had come off the road and collided with a tree.

“The occupants, a man and a woman, were both treated for potentially serious injuries and conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment.”

The fire service said that one vehicle was damaged by a fallen tree and one casualty was medically trapped.

Crews used cutting gear and passer by assisting in clearing debris.

At about the same time on the A49 at Prees Green a man and a woman were both treated by ambulance staff for injuries not believed to be serious and taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A49 near Prees Green, Whitchurch at around 7.45pm on Saturday and sent an ambulance to the scene. On arrival, crews found two cars had been involved in a collision. A man and a woman were both treated by ambulance staff for injuries not believed to be serious and conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.”

Shropshire Fire and Rescue said that one of the people had been 'mechanically trapped' and crews used small gear to release the casualty from the vehicle.
