According to statistics, another 123 people have suffered serious injuries in crashes where speed was a contributing factor.
Now, West Mercia Police have got TruCamll handheld cameras, which they can take across Shropshire to any crash blackspots or areas of concern.
Officers were in Bridgnorth Road, Madeley to demonstrate the cameras, which can either be held by hand or mounted to a tripod.
The equipment has the ability to capture and process offences much quicker than older devices and produces higher quality, clearer pictures of offending vehicles and therefore ensures a more efficient use of officers time and a more effective court process.
Sergeant Ian Cole, Madeley Safer Neighbourhood Team, West Mercia Police, said: “There are many families that unfortunately know far too well the devastating consequences that speeding and collisions can lead to.
“Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads in Telford is our priority and reducing the speed that people travel is a key part of this.
“These cameras use the latest technology and will allow us to address speeding in areas of greatest concern so we welcome their introduction.”
Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “It’s a sad fact that too many people are being killed or seriously injured on our roads. That’s why there is a focus on reducing the harm caused at the heart of my Safer Communities Plan.
“I speak regularly to residents in Shropshire who are rightly concerned about speeding and anti-social driving in their community. That’s why I have funded the latest camera equipment to support the local policing team improve road safety by carrying out effective and efficient enforcement activity.”
Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for highways, housing and enforcement, said: “Even a single life endangered or lost to dangerous driving is one too many and technology such as this will help make the roads in Telford and Wrekin safer.
"We are pleased to support the police force in being as effective as they can be with one of the most advanced speed cameras around, allowing for quicker and clearer identification of people committing offences. Using cutting edge technology will ensure our front line services are one step ahead.”
