The 19,000sq-ft site at Southwater has been turned into a charity megastore, occupied by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

It is set to open at 10am today (Dec 11), and will be one of the charity’s largest retail sites.

“Customers can shop a range of preloved gifting and clothing, including menswear, ladies and children’s clothing, as well as great furniture pieces,” said Nigel Marston, BHF area manager.

“So if you’re in need of that extra dining chair around your Christmas table this year, we’ve got you covered.

“Our team have been busy setting up for the opening and are nearly ready to welcome shoppers through the doors. And what’s even better, by shopping with the BHF you’ll also be helping to fund our life saving research, helping keep families together for Christmases to come.”

The building has remained empty following the closure of Wilko in October 2023. The budget retailer entered administration the previous August, with administrators PwC unable to secure a rescue deal for the entire business.

Some Wilko stores were sold to other retailers, including B&M, The Range and Pepco. There is now a Wilko collection point at The Range in Telford Bridge Retail Park, while B&M has relocated to the former Wilko shop in Wellington.
