A Rhayader resident concerned about trees being cut down has asked the town council to support a tree planting scheme.

The Church Street resident said they are concerned about the number of trees that have been coming down in the area, particularly at Waun Capel Parc.

The person said a sycamore had come down and three more trees were due to come down by the leisure centre and in these days of climate change trees are very important.

The resident asked the town council to commit to a plan to have a yearly tree planting scheme for the town and to plant trees to replace those that have come down for various reasons.

They said they had identified a number of places where tree planting would be appropriate and the resident said they would be able to offer advice on which trees would be best to be planted.

The town clerk Julie Stephens said she had asked the resident to come to the council meeting but the town council only has a very small amount of land so they would have to rely on other organisations for any other land.

The council was reminded that it has planted trees in the past and the Waun Capel Parc group have also planted some.

Councillor Angela Davies said the trees that have come down had to be taken down because they were deemed unsafe.

The council agreed to write back to the resident and say they support the thinking and opinions expressed but they would not be able to commit to the suggested plan because they do not have much of their own land.
