News that the Department of Health and Social Care will be making a £100 million capital investment in hospices across the country, coupled with the continuation of a £26 million grant scheme for another year, has been welcomed by hospices in the West Midlands.

Severn Hospice, which has branches in Telford and Shrewsbury, said the announcement was a step in the right direction.

Heather Tudor, chief executive of Severn Hospice, said: “Any increase in financial support for us and hospices has got to be welcomed.

“We don’t yet know the detail of today’s announcement and what it will mean for us locally, however.

“This year we faced increased running costs of £1.1 million and have been fortunate – and are grateful – that our community has responded to that additional need."

She said our Care at Christmas campaign had highlighted not only the work of the charity, but also the immeasurable value its care added to thousands of families facing heartbreak.

“Severn Hospice has been caring for the community for 35 years this year and we can only continue to provide that care in future if we secure the finances we need," she added.
