Oscar Carrington admitted drink driving when he appeared at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates’ Court this week.

The 26 year-old from Nantyrhwch, Tregaron was pulled over by police near Builth Wells on November 23, when petrol station staff reported a driver who appeared to be under the influence.

Prosecuting, Mr Shane Maddocks said; “Police had a call from a witness, regarding a drink driver.

“The witness suspected the male was intoxicated. He was struggling to pay for items in the Texaco garage.

“Police caught up with him in a layby. He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.”

Mr Maddocks said Carrington had no previous convictions.

Driving a VW Passat, Carrington was found to have 59 micrograms of alcohol in his breath – the legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Mitigating, Mrs Pat Matthews, said: “This is going to have an effect on him. He is a delivery driver part-time for Evri so, obviously, he won’t be able to do that once he loses his licence.

“He has never been before a court before. He would like to go on a drink driver improvement programme.”

Magistrates banned Carrington for 16 months and offered him the chance to attend the drink drivers’ rehabilitation programme.

He was fined £200 and will have to pay £85 costs and an £80 surcharge.
