A water leak which has resulted in a bill of over £4,500 for Knighton Town Council, is being investigated to see if it ca be fixed.

The town council is trying to find out if the leak can be repaired by volunteers.

The bill was for a water leak at the cemetery toilets on Presteigne Road but it was a leak that the council did not know about as it was under a hedge on the boundary edge and it was difficult to find.

Town clerk Lorian Craggs Alferoff told members at a recent meeting that the bill is for £4,679.18.

She said the stop tap was successfully located so the water had been turned off now and so the bill would not increase anymore.

She said she had set up a payment plan with Welsh Water so the council could pay the bill over the next 12 months but she said she would try and get the bill reduced as the council couldn’t possibly have known about the leak because of its location.

But according to a conversation Deputy Mayor Councillor Ben Butler had with Dwr Cymru, the council will not be able to negotiate over the cost of the water bill until the leak is repaired.

Members agreed to investigate the leak and see if it can be repaired by volunteers.
