Strong turnout for Shrewsbury Christmas poultry auction
Turkeys and geese sold for up to £80 and £78, respectively, as Halls auctioneers’ annual Christmas Dressed Poultry Show and Sale attracted a large crowd and competitive bidding.

Top prize at Shrewsbury Auction Centre which went to a 26lb bronze turkey from S. and S. Murray, Shipley Pattingham, Wolverhampton while the heaviest turkey prize was won by Stuart Edwards of Norbury Turkeys with a 38.5lb bird.
A total of more than 500 oven ready turkeys, geese, ducks and chickens from across Shropshire and bordering counties went under the hammer.
The pre-auction show was judged by Alan Tomlinson, a second generation turkey producer from Cheshire.
Norbury Turkeys took the prizes for best goose with a 13lb bird and best duck with a 9.5lb bird, while M. A. Andrew and Son, Ty Cerrig, Meifod took the prize for best chicken with a 11¾lb bird.
The other turkey placings were: 2, M. A. Andrew and Son with a 12½lb bird; 3, Staffordshire Turkeys with a 12½lb bird.
The top priced bird was a 27lb turkey from C. & S. M. Edwards of Freehold, Norbury which sold for £80. Turkeys sold for between £2 and £3 per lb all day.
Geese sold to £78 for Dawn Westwood of Bridgnorth for a 15lb bird, a 12lb duck to C & S. M. Edwards sold for £40 and an 11lb chicken from H. Edwards, Blakeley Stud, made £35.
Mr Tomlinson said: “It was an excellent show of poultry and the quality over all, particularly the turkeys, was very good.”
Yvonne Andrew from M. A. Andrew and Son, was delighted to win the prize for best chicken and come runner-up for the best turkey. “Our chickens have done marvellously well this year,” she said.
Shrewsbury Auction Centre manager Jonny Dymond, who shared the auctioneering duties with Henry Hyde, said: “It was a pleasure to sell with smiling vendors and buyers around the pens. It was a very successful well attended sale with 111 different buyers.
“I want to thank the producers for supporting this annual show in greater numbers this year and wish them and the buyers a very merry Christmas and a happy 2025.”
