Reverend Sam Mann, vicar of St Chad’s Church in Shrewsbury, took part in the symbolic ritual observed by many Christians during the festive period.

The tradition of lighting candles on Christmas Eve represents the Star of Bethlehem guiding the Three Wise Men to Jesus’s birthplace.

Reverend Mann said there has been a “wonderful” atmosphere in the church during the build-up to Christmas.

“It’s been going really well,” he said. “We’ve had a brilliant church service.”

There has also been a Christmas tree festival at the church, with lots of trees adorned with festive decorations as Shropshire folk get into the spirit of the season.

There will be a Christmas Eve midnight mass from 11.30pm tonight (December 24) before Christmas Day Holy Eucharist services from 8am and 10am at St Chads.
