Shrewsbury Food Hub, which was set up to try and prevent food from going to waste, has been inundated with festive grub from supermarkets across the town, and is running several shares this weekend and over the coming week to try and put it to good use.

As well as Yorkshires, sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, cabbages, cauliflowers, leeks, bananas and mushrooms, they also have bread, cakes and other items.

Charity trustee and volunteer Ali Thomas is urging people to head along and grab some food.

“We need the whole of Shrewsbury to come and help,” she said.

“Everybody is welcome. It’s not like a food bank. If the Queen of Sheba rocked up she’d have to take a couple of bags of sprouts.

“All the food is in really good nick. There’s nothing wrong with any of it at all, but we get inundated after Christmas because of all the best-before dates coming in at the supermarkets.

“We ask people to take some for their neighbours and that’ll help us get through the food.”

Anyone who goes to the food shares is asked to take a bag and take some food for free, but to donate £1 if you can to help the charity with its running costs.

On Saturday (December 28), there are five food shares in Shrewsbury - at the United Reformed Church in Abbey Foregate; Holy Spirit Church in Meadow Farm Drive, Meet Place in Maesbrook Road, Meole Estate; Emmanuel Church in Mount Pleasant Road, Harlescott; and Bomere Heath village hall. All the Saturday food shares start at 10am.

There are food shares on Sunday at St Giles Community Hall in Sutton Way and Martin Wilson School in New Park Road. Both start at 10.30am.

Throughout the week there will be food shares every day in Shrewsbury. To see the full timetable, visit the charity’s Facebook page at facebook.com/ShrewsburyFoodHub/?locale=en_GB
