Severe gales, heavy rain and the possibility of significant snow are on the cards for the UK next week with yellow weather warnings in place across much of the country.

While Shropshire looks to be missing out on this round of snow, one of the yellow weather warnings will be in place for the county on New Year's Day.

The Met Office say that "very strong winds" are expected to lead to some disruption around the county, with the weather warning in place between 9am on Wednesday and 6am on Thursday, January 2.

A spokesperson for the agency said: "A deep area of low pressure is expected to cross the UK from the west, bringing a spell of very strong winds. Gusts of 65 to 75 mph are likely around coasts and hills, especially in the south and west, with 50 to 60 mph gusts likely fairly widely inland."

Current forecasts show winds of between 50 and 60 mph are likely around midday across Shropshire - including Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Telford and Bridgnorth - on New Year's Day.

Ahead of the weather, the Met Office was advising residents to prepare for disruption to power supplies and travel plans.

They said: "Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."

Elsewhere in the UK, the agency has been issuing warnings for heavy rain and snow.

The most significant snowfall on New Year's Day is set to hit the north of England and south of Scotland, with up between 10 and 15cm of snow expected widely, and up to 25cm over hills.

On the same day, a weather warning for rain is in place across Wales with 20 to 40mm expected, reaching a possible 60 to 80mm across the hills.
