Shauney Connor, who is a candidate for the new ward of Market Drayton South, has raised £290 to support his local foodbank alongside £210 for his local Mencap site.
Each year at the North Shropshire town's Festival of Lights, Mr Connor runs a lucky dip and tombola stall to raise funds for his local foodbank, and this year he went one better to also support the charity that provides personalised support to people with learning disabilities and their families.
"As we all know, the cost-of-living crisis has hit many families hard, and its vital that we step up and support those who need it most," said Shauney. "I would like to thank all residents from Market Drayton and afar for visiting the stall and contributing to such a great cause."
Funds raised enabled Shauney to purchase essential food items and household supplies that will go to residents and families.
The candidate for Market Drayton South added: "Community solidarity is crucial, especially as winter approaches and many families and pensioners face tough decisions between heating their homes and putting food on the table. I will continue tirelessly to prioritise initiatives that provide direct assistance to our most vulnerable residents from small families to older citizens who feel the harshest impacts of the cost-of-living crisis."
Shauney also visited his local Mencap site in Market Drayton to see their work, donate the £210 he had raised, and have a singalong with members.
"Mencap does incredible work in fostering independence, providing those vital social services, enhancing the lives of people with learning difficulties," he added.
"I was thrilled to go to Mencap personally and tell them the good news. It was obvious from their faces that they were made up.
"These vital funds will help expand their services and improve facilities. As Mencap is a charitable group, both nationally and locally, it is run purely by volunteers and relies on donations. From the upkeep of the building to volunteer training, the £210 raised will enhance community programmes, improve accessibility, but also fund social activities from trips to the theatre or neighbouring towns and villages.
"This money will directly benefit residents, creating opportunities for personal growth, social engagement, and better support networks. It’s essential that all members of the community have the resources at their disposal to thrive”.
