It proved to be a busy start to 2025 with more than 2,700 calls taken in the 12-hour period marking New Year's Eve for the ambulance service.
From 6pm on December 31 to 6am on January 1, call assessors in the trust's Brierley Hill and Stafford emergency operations centres took no fewer than 2,764 calls from the West Midlands, 12 fewer than the 2,776 taken the previous year, making it the third busiest new year for the service in recent years.
Over the two days (December 31 to January 1), the trust took a total of 9,965 calls, a 5 per cent difference to 10,481 the previous year.
West Midlands Ambulance Service chief executive Anthony Marsh said: “A massive thank you to the hundreds of staff and volunteers who worked over this period, many giving up time with their family and friends to work additional shifts and support the service through these notoriously busy periods.
“It’s not just those on the road, but also the team in our control rooms and also the staff who support these colleagues in areas such as vehicle preparation, mechanics, stores, distribution and IT; it is a real team effort.
