Rhayader Town Council's new year message

With snowfall having covered the streets of Rhayader and Cwmdauddwr in November, the onset of winter has been felt by all.

As Christmas approached we often think about our wants for the future.  The Town Council’s main wish is for our community to retain the vital services it needs – and deserves - to function.

Powys County Council’s suggestion to close our Leisure Centre to save it money misses the point entirely; it simply takes away opportunity, threatens existence of other groups, and pushes extra costs on to residents and businesses alike.  The loss of such facilities WILL significantly reduce our community’s resilience in the face of many other challenges. Closing them is nothing short of reckless.

As Mayor, it has been a privilege to attend so many well-run events this year demonstrating our community’s incredible energy, enthusiasm and  ‘can-do’ attitude. We observed the anniversary of the D-Day Landings and we commemorated and further dedicated the 80th anniversary of our War Memorial.

Town councillors are volunteers too, and we are pleased to have secured a £50,000 plus energy saving grant to improve the sustainability of our Dark Lane toilets.

Councillors are involved in many other groups and activities too with the express aim of ensuring Rhayader and Cwmdauddwr is as good as it can be. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow councillors and the very many volunteers who work so very hard for us all.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year!
