In an announcement that shocked customers on social media, the owners of Greek restaurant Meze announced they would be serving up their last plate on Sunday, January 5.

The award-winning, family-run restaurant has been serving traditional Greek and Cypriot food to visitors and residents of the town since 2017.

The business is also involved with a collection of holiday cottages, Philoxenia Mews, to the rear of the restaurant.

A statement posted on social media last week said: "To our dear customers, it is with a heavy heart that we announce Meze (and Philoxenia Mews) will be closing its doors here in Ellesmere.

“We would like to thank you from our heart and soul for your support over these last nine adventurous years and all the memories we have made together, team colleagues and guests.

“Our last day of trading will be Sunday, January 5.”

According to the company's website, the restaurant was started by mother and daughter, Debbie and Elena.

The website states: "Debbie spent 30 years in Cyprus, lived with the locals, and grew up with the traditions and values of the Cypriots.

"But what she will never forget from this small island is her grandmother's food, the deliciousness, and simplicity that was hidden in a single meal, made with plenty of love. That was her greatest inspiration.

"So, after many years, Debbie and her daughter Elena returned to the UK, determined to share the traditions and the love they were taught for Greek/Cypriot cuisine."
