Five vehicle crash involving HGV closes A5 towards Shrewsbury

The A5 towards Shrewsbury has been shut after a five vehicle crash involving a lorry this morning.

The A5 route has been shut from Junction Seven towards Shrewsbury, following an incident shortly after 7pm.

The ambulance service said a number of people were being treated - with the air ambulance in attendance.

A spokesman said: "We were called at 7.10am this morning to reports of a multi vehicle RTC on the A5 in Upton Magna, Shrewsbury.

"Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a critical care car from Midlands Air Ambulance Charity responded to the scene. Crews are currently treating a number of patients."

An update from Shropshire Police urged drivers to find other routes.

It said: "Police are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A5 near Upton Magna.The road is closed is at the junction 7 slip road. Please seek alternative routes."

National Highways said there are currently delays of around an hour while emergency services respond to the incident.

An update from the agency said: "The A5 is closed northbound between the M54 J7 and the A49 (Shrewsbury) due to a collision

"West Mercia Police are in attendance."

It said a diversion route was in place with people advised to follow a 'hollow circle diversion symbol'.

They are advised to exit the M54 Westbound at Junction 7 and turn right onto Holyhead Road, then continue on Holyhead Road and take the first left onto B5061, continue on B5061 and merge onto B4380, continue on B4380, then at the A5 Emstrey roundabout take the first exit onto A5 Westbound.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident involved one HGV and four cars with five crews responding to the incident.

It said it had been alerted to the situation at around 7.07am.

Five crews have been sent to the scene, along with the ambulance service.
