The announcement by Airband comes after a poll of Shropshire residents found 25 per cent said they personally rely on their community hubs with 51 per cent using them for social events, 25 per cent for recreation and 19 per cent for access to key services.

Airband said that more than 500 venues across its network have been connected so far, and the independent internet provider is asking people who run community hubs across Shropshire to get in touch and register for free broadband services.

The initiative is part of Airband’s broader commitment to offer complimentary wi-fi to community hubs throughout its network, covering Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Devon.

Research by the broadband provider has aimed to highlight the importance of community centres and their role in providing essential services in rural areas.

A poll of 1,000 UK adults from rural areas, focusing on Shropshire, was undertaken by Prospectus Global on behalf of Airband.

Airband said 20 per cent of residents surveyed visit their local hub at least once a month and that 45 per cent of people in the poll said they are vital for their community.

James Hyland, Airband head of residential, said: "As a provider focused on connecting semi-rural and hard-to-reach areas, we understand the importance community centres play in building and strengthening the cultural fabric of an area, fostering connection, and creating a sense of belonging.

"We're proud to offer free broadband to these vital spaces, especially as crucial hubs for both digital and in-person connection."
