Roadworks have been taking place at Harlescott Lane in Shrewsbury, close to a railway level crossing, since Wednesday.

Initially the road was closed in the direction of Harlescott Crossroads, but has subsequently been fully shut.

Shropshire Council has now delivered an update on the progress on behalf of the utilities firm Cadent, which is carrying out the work.

It said that the road is likely to remain closed to traffic throughout the weekend - and into next week.

The council update said that it has asked for Cadent to complete the work and "reopen the road as soon as possible."

It said: "Cadent advise that they they have now located the gas leak by the level crossing and will have a team working over the weekend to carry out the repair.

"They are also currently investigating whether the leak is contained to the area by the level crossing.

"The road is likely to remain closed to traffic over the weekend and into next week, whilst the repairs and further investigations take place.

"We have asked them to complete the works urgently and reopen the road as soon as possible."
