Hamas scored a propaganda coup by organising an armed and uniformed guard as three Israeli hostages were handed over at the weekend. When the war began, Israel swore it would destroy Hamas and yet here are the terrorists, alive and well. At least, for the time being. . . .

Over the past 15 months Israel's techno-warriors have picked off their enemies' leaders with ruthless efficiency. And when this ceasefire breaks down, as it surely must, those arrogant young men will be identified, masks or no masks, hunted down and dealt with, one by one.

Meanwhile, how long can the noble-sounding “two-state solution” survive? It may sound the humane, common-sense answer to all the ills of the fractured Holy Land but how many Israelis will ever consent to live next door to a Palestinian state, fearing every day that the neighbours will slip under the barbed wire and slaughter Jewish families?
