Drugged-up Ahmed Lal, aged 24, had been “showing off” to his friends speeding around Wellington before he hit David Skinner in Watling Street.
Lal, who had taken cannabis before the collision, then gave police his cousin’s details and fled to a hotel in Stoke-on-Trent to try and evade justice.
Shrewsbury Crown Court was told Mr Skinner was on his way to a shop at around 3.30pm on June 18, 2023 to “pick up some peas for his tea”.
The court was shown CCTV footage of the victim crossing the road before being hit by the white BMW, which had its roof down, and being thrown into the air.
A passenger in Lal’s car got out while the vehicle was still moving and fled the scene.
Prosecutor William Dudley said experts estimated Lal hit Mr Skinner at at least 67mph on the 30mph stretch of road, and may have been going as fast as 71.5mph.
Two men in the public gallery, who were attending in support of Lal, smirked and suppressed laughter as the footage of the collision was shown.
“He was racing around town beforehand,” Mr Dudley told the court. “His speed was far too fast.”
