An inquest opening held at Shirehall in Shrewsbury heard that Michael John Watson, 78, was injured when he was hit by a vehicle in the car park of McDonald’s in Donnington, Telford, on December 14 last year.

The ambulance service was called to attend the scene of the incident and Mr Watson, a retired civil servant, was taken to Royal Stoke Hospital with multiple injuries.

Shropshire Coroner John Ellery was told Mr Watson, of Greenaway Place, Donnington, was later transferred to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford - but developed pneumonia and died in January 18.

The hearing was told that West Mercia Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash which injured Mr Watson.

The hearing was adjourned for a full inquest to take place at Guildhall in Shrewsbury on May 22.
