TV personality and Countryfile host Helen Skelton has worked with the outdoor experts at GO Outdoors to reveal the UK’s top 10 family-friendly walks.
The top 10, which consists of walking routes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, looks at the length and stand-out points of each route, such as playgrounds, wildlife and spaces to explore.
A four-mile route from Wray Castle to Ambleside in the Lake District took the top spot, followed by a three-mile route in Glen Etive in the Scottish Highlands and a three-miler around Chatsworth Park in the Peak District.
But coming in at number nine was a two-mile route through Carding Mill Valley in the Shropshire Hills, near Church Stretton.
The route from the National Trust car park up through the valley is described by the company as a "short and gentle walk... ideal for families with younger children".
"The trail passes through a tranquil valley, with streams perfect for paddling and catching tadpoles. Kids can explore the surrounding hills or enjoy a picnic on the grassy banks. For a fun day out in nature, Carding Mill Valley is hard to beat."
Helen Skelton, GO Outdoors brand ambassador, said: “For me, there is no better way to enjoy family than exploring the UK’s great outdoors.
“The outdoors is hugely important for improving physical health, mental wellbeing and making memories with family and friends. I love spending the weekend outside with the kids, cycling and exploring and see it as an opportunity to unplug from technology.
“The Great British weather cannot always be relied on, so I recommend packing extra layers and waterproof jackets as well as a spare change of clothes for the way home.
“Planning activities to do with the family during time outdoors, such as geocaching, collecting materials for crafting or playing ‘outdoor bingo’ can get your children involved in a walk, and help time to pass by quickly!”
