Spring adventures at Elan Valley: Exciting activities for all ages
Spring is just around the corner, and Elan Valley is ready with a range of activities set against the stunning backdrop of the Victorian dams.

From a creative workshop for children to a rare celestial event and a thrilling Dragon Quest Trail, this remarkable destination offers something for everyone.
Children looking for a fun-filled activity can take part in a Half Term Workshop on Saturday, February 22 and March 1 from 10:30am until 11:30am. They will get hands-on decorating a plant pot with felt-tips and stickers before filling it with compost and a spring-flowering bulb to take home and nurture. All materials are provided, and the workshop costs £5 per child. You can book your space here: https://elan-valley.co.uk/events/half-term-workshop/ .
Young adventurers can embark on the Dragon Quest Trail, a family-friendly challenge that takes participants on a journey through Cnwch Woods. Armed with a map and worksheet (£2.50, available at the visitor centre), explorers must locate hidden dragons and crack the code to claim a prize. This self-guided trail is available daily.
For even more family fun, join us for hobby horse jumping, pony walking, and guinea pig cuddles! This free event, organised by Pentre Farm in Old Radnor and funded by a Playworks grant, will take place on February 24 from 10:30am to 12pm. Meet at the visitor centre for a walk through Cnwch Woods before returning to the horse box (also located at the visitor centre). This event is weather dependent and requires no booking. You can find out more information on www.pentrefarm.co.uk.
Improve your wildlife photography skills with a workshop led by local photographer Andrew Nineham. This three-hour session, taking place at the visitor centre on Sunday March 9, from 10am to 1pm, will guide you through the essentials, including camera settings, composition, understanding wildlife behaviour, and post-production techniques. The cost is £40 per person. Book your place by contacting Andrew on 07300 922012 or email Andrew.group9projects@gmail.com.
For those fascinated by the wonders of the night sky, the Elan Valley Dark Sky Team will be hosting a partial solar eclipse event on Saturday, March 19, from 10am to 12pm outside the visitor centre. The Moon will obscure a third of the Sun, offering a spectacular sight - weather permitting! Solar glasses will be provided to ensure safe viewing, and no booking is required.
Outdoor enthusiasts can hire a bike from the Bike Hub, located next to the visitor centre (including standard bikes, e-bikes, and children’s bikes) and explore Elan Valley’s scenic trails, ranging from easy green routes to the more challenging black trails. Whether cycling alongside the reservoirs or tackling forested climbs, there's a route for every ability. You can view these routes on the website. https://elan-valley.co.uk/cycling/
For local artisans and small businesses offering crafts, food, or other unique items, Elan Valley Visitor Centre is offering a unique opportunity to showcase products with pop-up stall spaces available daily in the visitor centre foyer. With limited spaces and prices starting at £10 per stall (£20 on bank holidays and event days), it’s a great opportunity to connect with potential customers. Interested vendors can get in touch on 01597 810880 or email elanvalley@dwrcymru.com to check availability and secure a booking.
