At 9:39 BST the index stood at 5,407.80, as poor retail sales figures soared the mood of traders.
Energy and resources continued to suffer with Cairn Energy falling 5.88 per cent and Tullow Oil down 4.77 per cent.
BG Group dropped 4.476 per cent, AMEC fell 4.21 per cent and Scottish 7 Southern Energy slid 4.08 per cent.
However, in a mixed market, London Stock Exchange Group rose 8.91 per cent, after Morgan Stanley upgraded the bourse to 'equal-weight' from 'underweight' and its ratings.
B&Q owner Kingfisher rose 8.05 per cent to 126.10p off the back of encouraging sales data, while Rolls Royce gained 3.39 per cent from a rise in profits of eight per cent.
Next and Vodafone rose 1.88 per cent and 1.86 per cent respectively.
