The chief executive of a leading Shropshire company has scooped the regional title in the search for the country's Entrepreneur of the Year.

Jason Powell, of Ludlow-based Premier Medical Group Limited, was named a winner at the Ernst & Young North & Midlands Regional Entrepreneur Of The Year 2009.

Premier Medical is the UK's largest provider of medical opinion, providing insurers and solicitors with enhanced levels of service in delivering 113,000 medical reports per annum.

The judges said Mr Powell's vision for the company was a "great transformational story", adding that he had changed the way the market was working with medical opinion to insurance companies.

"He has clear UK and European growth plans - twice as profitable as his competitors in the market," the judges said.

Mr Powell will go forward to a national final in October, where 53 top executives from across the UK will compete for the title Ernst & Young Overall UK Entrepreneur Of The Year.

The UK winner will go out to Monte Carlo in May 2010 to represent their country at Ernst & Young's World Entrepreneur Of The Year awards.

Ronnie Bowker, Ernst & Young senior partner and Entrepreneur Of The Year leader for the region, said: "Entrepreneurs achieve great things and are real drivers of the global economy. Their vision, leadership, determination and sheer hard work are an inspiration to us all.

"Entrepreneurs, like Jason, are the life-blood of the region's economy and even during the tough economic conditions we are experiencing they continue to invest, grow and create wealth in the region."

Mr Powell was recognised for his integrity to recognise and adopt other people's good ideas; his astute commercial judgement tempered with patience, a passion to infuse team energy and the determination to drive and deliver a project profitably to market.
