Shropshire was handed a double jobs bonanza today with two employers announcing a total of 40 new jobs.

In Shrewsbury, a new restaurant and bar could create up to 20 positions.

Meanwhile in Malpas, near Whitchurch, a new £1 million Harry Tuffins store is expected to create a further 20 positions.

Stephen Kynaston, of Frankwell Catering Ltd, has submitted plans to Shropshire Council to transform the empty Shropshire Dairies site in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, into a venue which will include seven new letting bedrooms. If the scheme goes ahead it could pave the way for 10 full-time and 10 part-time jobs.

The site, which will be known as The Silverton Hotel, is being proposed as a "boutique" hotel.

A statement says: "It will add value to the local economy, increase spend per head and increase the likelihood of repeat visits, without harming the intrinsic value of the character that makes Shropshire attractive as a tourist destination."

In Malpas, independent supermarket chain Harry Tuffins wants to open its tenth store this summer. Bosses expect to table plans at Chester and Cheshire West Council next week.

The retailer snapped up the site, a former petrol station, earlier this year and plans to transform it into a 2,800 square foot supermarket.

Paul Delves, managing director of Harry Tuffins, said: "There is a definite need for a Tuffins branded forecourt and shop in the village of Malpas and we're looking forward to providing a complete service for the local community there."
