Rate relief scheme for Mid Wales businesses
Businesses in Mid Wales are being urged to apply for a discount which could see business slashed under a £590,000 scheme.
Powys County Council said The Wales Retails Relief Scheme will provide a discount up to £1,000 for retailers and food and drink premises with a rateable value of less than £50,000.
The Welsh Assembly has given the council £590,000 to help businesses flourish in the area.
The scheme will run for the financial year 2014/15 and the council is urging as many people as possible to sign up for a reduction.
Councillor Rosemarie Harris, cabinet member responsible for regeneration at the council, said: "The council will be writing to potential qualifying retail businesses in the county inviting them to apply for this discount.
"I'm delighted the Welsh Government has introduced this scheme and I would urge our retail premises that qualify to apply for this discount.
"The retail sector is changing and many high streets are having to adapt to changing consumer preferences in how people shop. This scheme aims to support Powys businesses that are responding to the challenges that result from this changing retail environment.
"Not only will it provide assistance to many businesses during this current economic situation, it will also inject money into the Powys economy, support jobs and contribute to the development of sustainable and vibrant town centres.
"We will continue to work closely with the Welsh Government to deliver real economic benefits for the Powys economy."
It is the second boost to the Mid Wales economy this week with the Welsh Assembly's economy minister Edwina Hart confirming funding for 25 new start-up businesses across Welshpool, Newtown, Llanidloes and the surrounding areas.
She said she hopes the funding, under the Sirolli Effect model will create or safeguard 75 jobs.
