Alveley, near Bridgnorth, faces a future without postal services after the post office was put up for sale, as there has been no interest in anyone taking it over.

Alveley Parochial Church Council consulted a number of people about taking on the running of the post office and had meetings with officials from head office.

The council decided it could not continue to run the post office to the standard it has been run for many years. It said the loss of the service would be “detrimental” to the life of the community.

Alveley and Romsley Parish Clerk Graham Hurry said they were looking into other ways to keep postal services in the area.

He said: "Many people have relied on the post office, particularly older people so they're going to find it more difficult to cope.

"The nearest post office is a part-time one in Quatt just down the road but the nearest full time one is Bridgnorth and that is eight miles away.

"We've had some very pleasing news that the post office is engaged in providing some form of post office as soon as possible."
