Replacement service launched after Shropshire village Post Office closes
A temporary mobile post office service is to run in Alveley after the village near lost its post office after 20 years.
But it has now been announced that a mobile outreach service will be running once a week in the village, near Bridgnorth.
The post office was put up for sale but there has been no interest in anyone taking it over.
Alveley Parochial Church Council consulted a number of people about taking on the running of the post office and had meetings with officials from head office.
The council decided it could not continue to run the post office to the standard it has been run for many years. It said the loss of the service would be “detrimental” to the life of the community.
Alveley and Romsley Parish Clerk Graham Hurry said they are looking into other ways to keep postal services in the area.
He said: "Many people have relied on the post office, particularly older people so they're going to find it more difficult to cope.
"The nearest post office is a part-time one in Quatt just down the road but the nearest full time one is Bridgnorth and that is eight miles away.
"We've had some very pleasing news that the post office is engaged in providing some form of post office as soon as possible."
Post Office spokesman Michael Norman, said: “Following the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use, Alveley Post Office closed on May 23.
"We would like to reassure customers that we are working hard to restore the service to the community as soon as possible and are committed to maintaining services in the area.
"We will be seeking alternative premises for the post office so any local retailers interested in this business opportunity should contact us.
"In the interim and while we continue to seek a permanent solution for the community, a temporary mobile outreach service will operate from Arden Way, Alveley Community Centre every Tuesday between 11.45am to 12.45pm.
“We know how important post office services are to people in area and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause.
"Any customers wishing to access post office services may do so from any convenient Post Office branch."
