Shrewsbury's Toys R Us store will continue to trade until early this spring before closing for good.

Toys R Us announced plans to close its Shrewsbury store in early December as part of a company restructure to close at least 26 UK sites, putting up to 800 jobs at risk.

The plan involves a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) under which the firm will seek creditor approval to reorganise its property portfolio.

Signs have gone up this week at the store on Meole Brace Retail Park, advertising a closing down sale.

Store manager Mark Fielden said: “We will continue trading from this location until the Spring 2018 and would like to invite all our customers to visit us one last time."

The closure of Shropshire's only Toys R Us store will mean customers having to travel to stores at Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent or Merry Hill.

The company employs around 3,200 people, with 105 stores across the UK, but has made losses in the UK for seven of the last eight years and says it needs to transform the business to meet tough retail market conditions.
