Despite rumours that the popular chain was hoping to take over the NatWest building in the town when it closes later this year, the company said it was not taking over the unit.

Patrick Beech, chairman of the town's Chamber of Commerce, said that it would have been an ideal fit for the town.

"The building is in the centre of Newport and it's in good nick. A Wetherspoons would have been ideal, but if some smaller outfit would come along, ran properly, that could be good as well."
