Redundancies at Wem tyre firm
A tyre company in Wem is having to make a “small” number of redundancies as it ends its re-tread activities.
Kingpin Tyres Ltd, based on Wem Industrial Estate, is to concentrate on tyre collection and recycling, which the family business says is very strong.
Factory manager Mark Cartwright said the company had been based in Wem for 45 years and brought employment to the town.
“The recycling – shredding – side of the business is very strong and we obviously continue to run the tyre collections,” he said.
“Unfortunately with competition from budget tyres and the price of raw materials we are having to end the re-tread tyres.”
The company said only a small number of job losses were involved. It has not confirmed an exact figure.
The firm was launched by Jack Crangle in 1973. His son Barry and daughter Deborah later took on the running of the firm.
