The Iceland supermarket has been open for many years in Welshpool's Puzzle Square, however bosses have announced it is set to close in September.

The news comes after Aldi opened in the town, with Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's also having stores.

Iceland spokesman Keith Hann said: "I can confirm that the Iceland store in Welshpool will close on September 15, owing to the expiry of our lease.

"We are currently in consultations with our nine colleagues at the store.

“We are grateful to our customers in Welshpool for their support.”

The premises, which takes up units two, three and four in Puzzle Square, are now being marketed by Morris, Marshall and Poole with Norman Lloyd in an attempt to secure a new tenant for it.

Vacate

The current tenant will vacate the 3,500sq ft sq ft premises at the end of the company’s lease.

The leasehold property was originally built in 1986 as part of a wider retail development in the Puzzle Square area.

The property is situated within a thoroughfare between Church Street and Broad Street, Welshpool’s prime shopping street.

David Jones, a partner at MMP/NL, said: “The sale offers a rare opportunity to lease one of the town’s main commercial retail premises.

“It’s in a key retail area of the town centre, offering a good opportunity for a retailer to capture the foot through.

“Welshpool has a buoyant retail trade with a wide range of popular independents and national retailers.

"As one of the key market towns in the area it attracts shoppers and visitors from a wide area."
