Aldi officially submits plans for second Shrewsbury store
Plans have now been submitted for a new Aldi supermarket in Shrewsbury which will create 40 new jobs.
Aldi wants to open a second store in Oteley Road, on a site in front of Percy Thrower’s Wyevale Garden Centre.
It is a hybrid application to also include outline plans for a care home.
The discount retailer, which was recently named Britain's favourite supermarket by Which? has revealed the plans to Shropshire Council.
George Brown, Aldi's regional property director, said the company is pleased with the level of support from the public.
He added: "The plans have attracted a huge amount of local support. As part of its pre-application consultation, Aldi wrote to nearly 2,000 residents asking for feedback on the plans. Over 90 per cent of respondents supported the proposals, with many saying the site was perfect for a new store.
Feedback
"We’re delighted by the extremely high level of support for our proposal to construct a new food store on the Oteley Road site. I would like to thank those residents and stakeholders who took part in the consultation and provided their feedback."
Waitrose won planning permission from Shropshire Council to build a 30,000sq ft store on the site more than five years ago and had said it would bring up to 200 jobs to the town.
But the supermarket pulled out after it became embroiled in a planning row with budget retailer Lidl, which has since built a store further along Oteley Road on land next to Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s Montgomery Waters Meadow.
Mr Browd added: "Although the site was granted planning approval for a supermarket several years ago, it has been unoccupied for some time. We want to put the land to good use and if planning consent is granted the proposal will see around 40 jobs created, with dozens more employed by the care facility."
Aldi presented the plans to Shrewsbury Town Council last month and members there voted in favour of the proposals.
Shropshire Council will determine the application, with a decision expected to be made in the coming months.
