Our Green Shop opened its doors on Mill Street in Low Town after being refurbished and made fit for purpose, operating as a not-for-profit store with a focus on the environment.

Volunteers had been fundraising to launch the shop for months and can now offer an array of ethically sourced household items and food while producing little to no waste.

Volunteer director Jennie Hart said: "Our Green Shop, a not-for-profit, community-based business, has opened in Low Town with a vision to inspire and encourage a more sustainable way of living. This will not only hugely benefit the town but will lower the impact local people have on our planet.

"After months of preparation, a group of dedicated volunteers, passionate about caring for the environment, are excited at its opening. The last year has been challenging because of the Covid-19 virus but many devoted supporters have given their time, offered loans or donations and helped with fundraising.

"The group have maintained their enthusiasm holding virtual meetings, where they have shared their vision for a low waste shop aiming to reduce use of plastic and offering plastic-free alternatives, organic wholefoods, items for specialist diets and ethical toiletries and household materials. Local products will be sold to support enterprising local people.

"The shop has a fresh and unique style. Volunteers have designed the space, fitting it out with donated, used furniture which they have stripped and varnished giving the shop a light and airy feel. A volunteer, generous with his time, has built the counter and shelving out of reclaimed wood. Varnished surfaces allow for frequent sanitising with environmentally–friendly cleaning products. Every care is being taken to maintain a safe place in which to shop.

"If you are hoping to live a healthy more sustainable lifestyle or are simply curious to try this new ethical venture, please do come and shop. If you are keen to volunteer, give a loan or make a donation, please come into the shop or make contact via Our Green Shop on Facebook."

The shop is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
