Apprenticeship opportunities continue to be offered through the Ladder for Shropshire which was relaunched in October in response to the devastating impact Covid has had on unemployment amongst young people in Shropshire.

The Ladder has gathered considerable support, including from larger employers who are acting as apprenticeship ambassadors to encourage their supply chain and subcontractors to consider apprenticeships.

In this short time already 60 more apprenticeship opportunities have been offered and the number of enquiries is increasing day by day.

Amanda Carpenter, who is the project lead for the Ladder, said: "It is brilliant that so many SMEs are coming forward. The Ladder offers impartial advice and support for these employers to be able to engage with apprenticeships and they really appreciate having an organisation like the Ladder to go to for impartial advice, some employers have never considered an apprentice before so they have found the Ladder a great source to support them on their journey.

"Without this it is unlikely that they would have offered opportunities. We have also been approached by many employers who already offer apprenticeship programmes but have appreciated talking to someone impartially to discuss how they can create apprenticeship opportunities for the young people of Shropshire. We are finding that as the word is spreading, more employers are coming forward.

“The Ladder is able to help employers understand the processes and access the incentives which are proving really helpful as employers start to rebuild after Covid.

"The types of apprenticeships which have been secured vary so much including accountancy, administration, engineering, construction, digital marketing, warehousing and so many more.

"The Ladder has formal links with all the main apprenticeship providers and will help employers to find the right training provider or college for them. In some instances the Ladder has helped with locating an out of area provider for a more unusual opportunity such as cycle maintenance and live events technician.

"The young people who we are recruiting in to these apprenticeships have so much to offer and it is so important that we do not create a forgotten generation but ensure that they have the skills to help build back the economy as we emerge in to the new post-pandemic world. Contact me at amanda@ladderforshropshire.org to discuss how to join with apprenticeships.”
