Responding to the proposals set out in the Queen’s Speech, director of business Ruth Ross said the chamber network would have a "laser focus" on ensuring the pledges were carried through.

“We must not underestimate the damage and disruption that Covid has done to our economy – or the support measures which will need to be provided for many more months to help businesses back on their feet.

“Shropshire businesses will welcome the clear direction in the Queen’s Speech as the Government looks to boost the economy and place all parts of the UK on an equal footing.

“As companies across our county begin the slow process of rebuilding following the pandemic, it is vital that they are given the support they need to kick-start recovery.”

She added: “The needs of many Shropshire businesses have changed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, so we need to ensure a strong focus on improving digital and technical skills that match the needs of local companies.

“Improving 5G mobile services and superfast broadband is a key priority here in Shropshire to ensure that companies can rebuild, grow, and maintain flexible working patterns.

“As the British Chambers of Commerce has stressed, these are challenges that have existed for a long time – but we are now at a critical juncture where they must be addressed.”

She added: “We were slightly disappointed not to see more details plans for new employment legislation that could address the flexibility of working practices did not feature.

“The pandemic has forever changed the way people work, and Shropshire employers need clear guidance on how to provide long-term flexible working arrangements that make jobs accessible for everyone.”
