The borough came top of the list in a survey of UK council areas by Money.co.uk as public houses see coronavirus rules on indoor hospitality eased. The website analysed where drinkers can go to sample the cheapest pint.

Telford's borough was closely followed by Hartlepool where a pint will only set you back £2.05 and Scarborough where an average pint costs £2.10.

But licensee Ed Lowe, of Wellington's Plough Inn, said the price of beer were dependent on the type of hostelry and the product. A pint at the premises, in King Street, costs between £2.30 and £3.

"If you are a big chain which can take advantage of tax breaks then you can afford to sell a pint for £2, but businesses like mine can't do that.

"Twice we've had to pour our beer down the drain due to lockdown although we get do get the money back. The good thing is that we're back open at last," Mr Lowe said.

Meanwhile Lichfield, in Staffordshire, ranks 18 on the list of areas having the most watering holes serving the population with one public house per 1,164 residents.

London was the most expensive place for a pint where it costs on average £5 for a beer or higher.

There are an estimated 47,000 pubs to serve the 66 million UK population or an estimated 1,000 pubs per 1.4 m people.
