Toilet roll manufacturer lodges application for expansion at Telford site
A Telford-based toilet roll manufacturer has lodged plans to extend its Stafford Park site which could create up to 30 jobs in the area.
Northwood Hygiene lodged an application with Telford and Wrekin Council last week which would see the firm's warehouses and offices extended by around 14,700 square meters.
The £750,000 scheme is a revival of a lapsed 2019 proposal which was approved by Telford and Wrekin Council, with applicants Norpap Property saying the updated application is now designed to implement the same development in two phases.
According to supporting statements submitted with the proposals, the firm plans to add additional storage space and loading bays in its warehouses as well as providing up to 40 extra desks for its office based staff.
The document says the expansion of the firm's existing premises is needed to facilitate its "growing needs", with a knock-on effect on the number of loading bays and storage space required. The company says between 30-40 jobs could be created by the expansion.
"The proposed development comprises an extension to the existing main building to accommodate the expanding business, providing additional storage space and loading bays as well as an office extension that will house an additional 30-40 desks and staff," said the statement.
"It consists of extensions to both sides of the existing building with the west L-shaped extension positioning the building closer to the existing site entrance."
"The proposed extension will encompass the area at the western edge of the site currently occupied by a smaller industrial unit, while the two smaller units on the eastern boundary will remain in situ. The existing part of the property will continue to have a manufacturing element," the statement added.
"The only difference between the proposed development and the previously consented scheme is that this application seeks to phase the development."
In the last five years Northwood, which employs 1100 people across its 10 UK sites, has seen sales rise to 26 million cases per year, with gross sales turnover increasing from £236 million to £493 million in the same period. Founded in 1974, the firm celebrated it's 50th anniversary this year.
Telford and Wrekin Council's planning department will decide on the scheme in due course.
