Detectives were this afternoon questioning the man in connection with a chase through Leegomery during which a man is believed to have been carrying a handgun.

The suspect was held this morning following raids at two addresses in Dawley and Arleston.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Wells said the arrest followed an investigation into an incident in Leegomery on September 8 involving the occupants of two vehicles – a black BMW and a silver Polo – which were travelling down Grainger Drive in Leegomery at around 7.15pm on September 8.

One occupant from each of the vehicles got out and were involved in a chase towards Catterick Close.

The man from the BMW, who was believed to be wearing a balaclava, may have been carrying a handgun, although no shots were fired.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Wells said today: "At just after 7.30 this morning we executed two warrants and as a result a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and taken into custody in Shrewsbury. "He will be questioned later today. Although we have made this arrest, we remain keen to speak to people who witnessed this incident.

"We are now particularly keen to trace a group of youths who were in the car park near the football pitches on Grainger Drive when the incident occurred."

He added: "After our initial appeal for witnesses, a number of people did come forward with information but we still remain very keen to trace the owner of a dark coloured Vauxhall Corsa which was parked in the area at the time.

"From where the vehicle was parked, we believe that the occupants would have witnessed the incident so it is vital that we speak to these individuals."

Witnesses can call the police on 101 to speak to rhw police in confidence.
