Two fellow passengers had to pull Steve Howarth off the man, as he rained punches and kicks down, just as the train, which runs from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury, was about to stop at Welshpool.

Shrewsbury magistrates heard the fight may have started after the Polish man, who refused to be named or make a statement after the incident on February 17, threw a piece of paper at him.

Howarth, of The Clock Tower, Walcot, Lydbury, admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause that person to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used.

Mrs Becky Jones, prosecuting, said: "He started punching the man in a frenzied manner."

Howarth got off the train at Shrewsbury and was arrested there.

Mr Alan Williams, for Howarth, said his client had found out that day his girlfriend had been unfaithful and was extremely intoxicated on a cocktail of alcohol and Diazepam at the time.

Magistrated sentenced Howarth, who has convictions for violence, to 12 weeks in jail.
