The raiders, who also took £133 in cash, snatched the haul after smashing a window of the house in Chapel Street, Dawley, and then ransacking bedrooms.

Home-owner Catherine Garvey, who had left the house secure at 7.55am yesterday and taken her daughters, Fern, 16, and 14-year-old Bryony to school, returned from work at 4pm to discover the raid.

Among the items stolen was an 18 carat gold, shield-shaped medal, bearing two crossed hurling sticks and the inscription 'Naul Hurling Club, 1909.

The medal was presented to Mrs Garvey's grandfather. Also taken was a rose gold wedding ring which had belonged to 52-year-old Mrs Garvey's mother-in-law.

Detective Constable Stephen Clark, of Telford CID, said: "Any witnesses or anyone with information can call police on 101."
