The robbery happened outside Dedman's grocers in Shrubbery Gardens in Wem.

Police said the man approached the victim and tugged her arm.

After the struggle, the robber escaped with the takings and three packets of cigarettes in a basket.

Detectives said hundreds of pounds were taken and the victim, who has not been named, was left shaken. Officers are now appealing for witnesses to the robbery which happened at about 11.35pm on Wednesday.

The cigarettes were found discarded near the scene and a man fitting the description of the offender was seen running down Kynaston Drive about five minutes later.

Detective Inspector Mark Bellamy, of West Mercia Police, said officers had received a report of a man acting suspiciously and 'hanging around' the shop late on Monday, New Year's Eve.

The offender was white, in his 20s and 'youthful', about 5ft in height and with a slim build. He was wearing a black hooded top.

Mr Bellamy added: "I am keen to hear from anyone who might find a discarded blue shopping basket with a broken handle in the town.

"As well as the shop takings, it also contained various invoices and about 50 books of postage stamps."
