Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust said its bird hide at Llyn Coed y Dinas, Welshpool, was completely gutted by fire on Sunday night, with nothing left to salvage.

The trust said staff were coming to terms with why someone would set fire to the hide, which attracts birds such as swallows, lapwings, bullfinches and herons.

Abi Crutcher, education officer for the trust, said she could not understand why anyone would target the hide.

She said: "Staff are devastated by this. We came in on Monday morning to be visited by the fire service who told us the wooden hide had been completely destroyed and the circumstances were suspicions.

"I can't get over why anybody would want to do this, it is just not on. People come from all around to sit in it and watch the birds in a natural habitat and now it has been destroyed.

"The only positive is that no birds were harmed in the fire."

Dyfed Powys Police said it would look into the cause of the fire with fire chiefs and anyone with information should call 101.
