Gareth Craig shoved the woman to the floor, causing her a serious shoulder injury.

Craig, 33, of Shrewsbury Road, Wem, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday and was sentenced to 48 weeks in prison, suspended for 24 months.

He had admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

The court heard Craig thought the woman, with whom he had been in a relationship for 18 months, had been cheating on him.

In February 2012 he took her mobile phone and when she tried to get it back off him, Craig pushed her to the ground.

Judge Peter Barrie, sentencing, said: "You had no business insisting on seeing what was on the phone. I am very concerned about your ability to use self control."

Craig was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, complete domestic violence sessions and pay £1,500 in compensation.

Mr Dean Easthope, defending, said of carpenter Craig: "Everyone who knows him says he is not a violent person."
