Karl Crompton is accused of giving police a false statement about the incident in Bridgnorth High Street which followed a confrontation between himself and driver Edward Phipps over a parking ticket.

He claims Mr Phipps drove into him after their confrontation on October 9, 2011, leaving him needing medical attention, Shrewsbury Crown Court has heard.

But after police checked CCTV from outside the Jewel of the Severn pub following an interview with Mr Phipps, Mr Crompton was charged with intending to pervert the course of justice. He denies the charge.

Crompton, 43, of Baldwin Webb Avenue in Donnington, Telford, told the court yesterday: "I am not a liar – I have no reason to lie. He drove aggressively towards me. He said he had had two heart attacks and asked could I take the ticket back. I explained there was an appeal procedure."

But Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, said Crompton had told lies to the police.

"Something happened on that day that made you angry and made you want to get the better of Mr Phipps," he said.

Eric Perigo, who claims he saw the incident happen while he was in the pub, said he did not see any contact between Crompton and the car, apart from him putting his hands on the bonnet to get him to stop.

The trial continues.
