Shrewsbury pipe bomb suspect fails in bail application

A terror suspect from Shropshire accused of plotting to kill two police officers in a pipe bomb attack in Northern Ireland has been refused bail.

Magistrates remanded Stuart Downes, of Ryton Close, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, in custody after appearing via video link at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday.

The 28-year-old has been charged with conspiracy to murder police officers, conspiring with a co-accused to cause an explosion, and preparation of terrorist acts.

Downes, who denies all charges, is next due in court on August 2 but will appeal against the refusal of bail on Wednesday.
