Dyfed-Powys Police said its helicopter was on another call when it was diverted to a reported theft from Welshpool's Tesco store.

Two men were seen being chased from the store by staff before the police took over.

Two arrests were made in High Street at 5pm yesterday.

Sian George, force spokeswoman, said police were alerted at approximately 3.25pm.

"The force helicopter was in the area on another call and assisted in a search for suspects. Two men were arrested in Welshpool and inquiries are continuing," she said.

The chase caused widespread interest through the town.

Shopper Alex Jones, 32, said: "I heard that two people had been seen sprinting from the Tesco store with some shopping and I bet they could not believe it when the helicopter started hovering overhead.

"Apparently they led the police on quite a chase around the town before being caught. Everybody was watching the helicopter as it circled the area."

Mother-of-one Sian Evans, 23, said she was shopping in Broad Street when she became aware of the incident.

She added: "People were out of the shops looking up and wondering what was going on. Then I saw two men in handcuffs being put in a police car near the opticians on High Street."

Anyone with information about the incident should call 101.
