Disabled driver is robbed of gold at knifepoint in Telford
A disabled motorist today spoke of the terrifying moment he was robbed at knifepoint for the gold jewellery his late father had given him.
Barry Pearce, 37, says he was driving his black motability Ford Focus slowly over a speed bump near the Abraham Darby School in Madeley, Telford, when two men jumped into the car.
"The man in the front put a knife at my throat and made me drive into Woodside," said Mr Pearce.
"The other man in the back put a knife against my cheek."
Mr Pearce was forced to turn right onto Woodside Avenue and then into Wyvern, a cul-de-sac.
"They basically attacked me," added Mr Pearce. "They ripped the chain from around my neck and they ripped the bracelet from around my wrist and left some nasty bruises.
"I carry a bag and they tried to cut that off me but their knife wasn't sharp enough.
"It scared the life out of me. I was so shocked I crashed my car into a bollard right afterwards. The police have got it now for forensics but it's ruined."
Mr Pearce, who has spinal damage, said the horrifying episode had shattered his confidence.
"It's my only source of transport and I don't feel very good about going out in the car on my own anymore," he said.
The jewellery snatched was worth an estimated £2,500 but was of far greater sentimental value to Mr Pearce, as his father had given it to him before he died.
"There was a St Christopher and a sovereign pendant on a chain which said 'To my son Barry, love Dad'. It was a rare misprint because the head was upside down.
"There was a man's gold bracelet too."
Mr Pearce said one of the robbers was chubby with cropped hair and the other was thin and scruffy.
Police are seeking witnesses to the incident which happened on Ironbridge Road, Madeley between 8.20pm and 8.30pm last Tuesday.
Detective Constable Cindi Henry, the investigating officer, said: "I am appealing for witnesses to contact CID at Malinsgate police station."
